Since 1988 Carlson has periodically sampled bottom sediment in Lake Calumet as part of the dredging program of the Illinois International Port District. Clay dredged from the Lake has been reused for landfill capping and related environmental construction in the area. Approximately 500,000 cubic yards were used to cap an abandoned and historically unregulated landfill on the north end of the Lake. This area was subsequently developed into the Harborside International Golf Center.
